How Do You Hand Roll a Sea Kayak?
Rolling a sea kayak is not as difficult as it may seem. In fact, with a little practice, anyone can do it! Here are the steps:
1. Start by sitting in your kayak in the water. Make sure that you are wearing a life jacket and that your paddle is within reach. 2. Reach over your head with both hands and grab hold of the gunwales (the sides of the kayak).
3. Using your arms, pull yourself up out of the water and onto your knees inside the kayak. You may need to use your paddle for balance at first, but eventually you will be able to do this without it. 4. Once you are on your knees, place one hand on each side of the cockpit (the area where you sit) and push down firmly.
This will help to stabilize the kayak. Face the stern (back) of the kayak and grab hold of the gunwale with both hands again. 5Slowly roll forward until you are lying on your back in the water next to the kayak with your feet still inside it.
. Remember to keep hold of those gunwales! If you let go, you’ll likely end up flipping alllll the way over 🙁
Now gently kick your feet until they come out from under the deck line and rise up above it – keeping a good grip on those gunwales alllll…the…wayyyy….up! You should now be looking up at sky – or if its night time – stars 🙂 If not – give yourself another good push upwards until you break free from underneath that deck line!

1. First, position your paddle across the cockpit of your kayak, with the blade facing away from you. 2. Reach over the side of your kayak and place one hand on the deck near the front of the cockpit. Use your other hand to grab the paddle shaft near the top of the blade.
